The Bright Lights Film Journal

An online publication devoted to examining “classic and commercial, independent, exploitation, and international film from a wide range of vantage points from the aesthetic to the political.” In addition to original articles on film criticism, the Journal also regularly features book and film reviews.


Cahiers du Cinema

The influential French film magazine available in multiple languages. Back issues can be ordered and are indexed and searchable in the archive (only available in French) by issue number, date, title, author, interviewer, film, director, or production year.


The Chicago Reader Brief Reviews

Searchable archive of brief movie reviews contains more than 10,000 capsule reviews by current and past critics, including Jonathan Rosenbaum and Dave Kehr. Some full-length reviews, dating from 1988, are also available on the site.


CineAction

This Canadian film journal aims for radical criticism and scholarship on moving image media including a range of cinemas and experimental film and video. Their website does not archive full-text articles, the journal has indexed its entire catalogue online, and back issues can be ordered.


Cineaste

A quarterly film journal in publication since 1967 with reviews, articles, and interviews. Selected issues since 2001 are archived with article titles, authors, abstracts, and occassionally a few online, full-text articles. All issues back to 1976 are catalogued with keyword descriptions.


Cinetext

A bilingual (English and German) Internet forum for film and philosophy maintained by the University of Vienna. The “Cinelinks” section provides links to a number of interesting websites, organized by topics like cognitivism, psychoanalysis, and film noir.


Film & History

A peer-reviewed interdisciplinary journal that studies the exchanges between film and history. The journal is affiliated with the American Historical Association and operates under the direction of the Center for the Study of Film and History.


Film Comment

The website for the Film Society of Lincoln Center's magazine of contemporary film criticism, providing a detailed index of past issues. All back issues are available for order and selected articles since 1997 are provided in full.


Film Journal International

A trade publication and website covering the motion picture industry, with special emphasis on theatrical exhibition.


Film Quarterly

Contains in-depth review essays on contemporary cinema as well as an extensive book review section. Issues since Spring 2001 are available for online ordering. The website has tables of contents for issues dating back to Fall 1996, and full-text articles are available through multiple databases, including JSTOR.


Film-Philosophy

An academic journal looking at world cinema, aesthetics, and film studies from a philosophical point of view. An archive is organized by volume, and full-text articles are available from every issue.

The International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI)

Jump Cut: A Review of Contemporary Media

Examines moving image media and cultures from an explicitly “nonsectarian left, feminist, and anti-imperialist” political stand, the website of the journal Jump Cut provides a chronological, searchable archive with access to full-text essays, reports, and features going back to its first issue.


The Mexican Film Resource Page

Provides an introduction to Mexican cinema in its historical and social contexts. Provides links to Spanish-language periodicals focusing on the entertainment media, links to film archives specializing in Mexican film history, and downloadable copies of The Mexican Film Bulletin.


Movie: A Journal of Film Criticism
